I agree with you folks on the AI issue. They are not very intelligent and in some cars they won't shift past 5th gear. They don't recognize you on the track and they observe no rules. Frankly, I don't know why the devs put them there.
But if you want to learn to race clean, fill the track with AIs and start from the back. Try to pass them clean and win that race. I bet you'll have your hands full.
I do miss racing with good AIs as I did on GP4. That game has AIs that race like people, they wait behind you and avoid wrecking. And you have to be good to beat them. I haven't seen nothing like that to date.
Good AIs may be a fuzzy dream in LFS but they are on my wish list.
Dumpy and CodieMorgan, perhaps you need to join a league that races in your time zone. The specialized leagues usually race on private servers but they have many active teams you can join. Try LOTA (League of the Americas) for a change and see how you like it.
They are in the North American continent and race in our time zones. We have many events scheduled and in fact we just finished a series of races for the GTI/GTRs called the Micro-GTR series. A lot of fun.
There are others too, like IGTC which is very active. IGTC normally races on Saturdays but it's mostly reserved for teams.
You're right again. That's why I stopped reading these forums until today. My first time in 2 months.
Good idea. There are more than just a few Americans who like NASCAR. But the problem would be the tracks.
The challenge in an oval race with the same car lies on your strategy and setup. You would not be very competitive using your WR set because it is designed for only one lap. But a 100 lap on an oval requires a long distance set and one that allows you to pass others at high/low speed.
Then we have the yellows. We would need a pace car and pace rules, since that is part of the NASCAR strategy. We should have paced yellows because without them everyone would be forced to pit on green. No fun.
Another thing: how many pit areas in each track?
This could be a lot of fun, especially if someone develops a short track. Here in the US we have lots to 1/4 mile ovals and some folks do get a kick out of that.
After a while you'll learn that there are some things you don't discuss in these forums, LOL!
Sorry to say, but many in these game forums are children who haven't developed their sensitivities and are rude to everyone. To boot, many can hardly converse in English and have difficulties understanding these posts. If you notice, many times they drive the posts in a different direction because they can't keep up with the subject.
You best bet would be to just read and if you need unbiased opinions, just PM someone whose posts show some kind of maturity. Or better yet, join a league or team forum where you can ask questions without kids making you feel like you are dumb and stupid.
This is the best advise I can give you, and btw you will see a barrage of posts commenting against what I just said. That would prove the point, right?
I appreciate all that has been said here and the good LOTF reputation. However, it is very hard to find a team that will accept new members in this day and age. Last time I checked LOTF, R4R, Carbon, CoRe, and others, none were accepting new members.
So, that would leave someone like me to start a team, right? What other choices are there? If you want to race and be with folks of your liking, that would be the only recourse.
Joining a league as a loner is fine, in fact I belong to LOTA. But I have to wait for the right event to race as a loner. With a team you can organize your own practice races and more.
For a while here, I fought against myself restraining myself from offering to be a sub-driver on teams to cover for anyone that may miss a race. That could open doors for a permanent position in a team once they get to know you. But to this day I have split feelings of anyone taking me seriously because I am so new at this.
And so it goes. Good luck to you guys, may the moon shine your way and the wind be on your back.
Matt, no offense created on your part. I was only offering a suggestion for your benefit. Anyway, you see how fast people volunteered to join, right? I give you lots of credit for applying wisdom here. Good luck with the team.
Suppose there's a skin that contains inflammatory language to some or perhaps graphics and it's posted in the skin forum.
Suppose some in the LFS community complain to the skinner about the undertones of the skin, would it be illegal for a user to adopt that skin removing the offensive stuff and replacing it with accepatable language?
On the other hand, reading the posts in the skin forum and reading about the intent of posting skins there, it leads me to believe that we can use any skin uploaded there unless the skinner states that it's private. Maybe I'm wrong, but if it's private why upload it?
Well, if I may offer a suggestion, it may be better not to classify the drivers as fast, medium, weak, etc. That kind of stereotyping doesn't work too well when you look for volunteers.
Unfortunate as it is, I don't think you gave the league enough time to develop. It would have been nice to wait to see a track rotation first, but a week or two doesn't reflect the health of the league.
I visited the tracks and as you stated on your website, no one was there. Then I looked it up this week-end and the server was gone.
Open racing is fine, but scheduled races are what the users depend on and we never had a schedule. There was a race and you issued some awards but I never knew the race was on until I read the post on your website.
If you decide to put the league back online, PM me. I'll support you as much as I can.
I have tried the hybrids and knobbilies on different cars and tracks, and there sure is a difference. But the question is: is it worth it?
I agree with Damo because I have used them on short and long races and they do fine on the 5 lap races. After that, they begin to heat up and lose the tread. I have driven them until they became slicks and eventually fell apart.
Initially you have good road grip, but after they begin to wear in, the cars become sort of unstable. We don't notice that because we make adjustments to our driving style automatically without considering the tires.
But if you take the same turn at the same speed and at the same G force (in the groove) without making any adjustment to your driving, you'll see that the tires begin to lose grip. They get mushy and you hear them skidding more.
The basic concept is that hybrids are off-road tires. They are softer and wear faster. But they help only in the turns. Soft tires add drag because of the friction with the road, so they are poor on long and straight stretches of track.
If anyone of you ever drove a real life car with snow tires or off-road tyres at high speeds, you can understand what I mean.
However, look at the WRs and you will see that the fastest setups have hard tires with high tire pressures, mostly in the 30-35 psi (207 - 241 Kpa).
Perhaps you are a little confused here. Windows is an operating system, not a game. In fact, any PC manufacturer that calls his computer an "MSDOS-PC" and uses Windows as an operating system must pay initial royalties to Microsoft. Those royalties are included in the license that MS issues with Windows.
But I presume that you are not aware of the law that the EU passed last year. In essense, the new law on software says that any software sold in Europe has to be sold as "open source". In other words, the software developers have a legal obligation to surrender the source code to the buyer. LFS included. In that sense, yes, you own the software.
That was debated in an EU court against Microsoft, for which MS developed the new operating system, Vista.
For this reason I said that if the LFS developers get in a legal jam with the EU laws, we might be out of all our investments in LFS.
Okay, here:
Sorry to disagree with you, my friend. I have owned Flight Simulator since it was developed in Champaign, Illinois, at the University of Illinois back in 1996. A company was formed after the developers graduated from the university and named it Sub-Logic until Microsoft bought them out and introduced FS4 in 1993.
I have all the versions of Flight Simulator clear to FS2004 and I have been able to play them all online without having to pay any extra money.
In case you don't know, there are many online networks for MS Flight Simulator, the largest are Vatsim (http://www.vatsim.net) and IVAO (http://www.ivao.aero). Vatsim has about 80,000 members and IVAO about 60,000. I have been a member of IVAO for 6 years and before that I was a member of SATCO which started back in 1997 using FS4. IVAO was formed in 1998 and Vatsim in 2001.
If Microsoft goes belly up, we can still use Flight Simulator on those networks. They are completely independent from Microsoft. We can't do that with LFS.
My point is that what comes on the CD (or downloaded) I should be able to to use even after the developers dissapear. This means, yes, until the end of time.
I don't think the question here is not how much or how. In this thread it hinges on your hatred for Americans. Why do you have to retort with hate when an American posts his views? You didn't say anything when the Europeans posted their displeasure with the price, did you?
To boot, the Americans have been supporting the additional money for the devs, in fact the person who suggested it is an American.
I think some of you folks should consider treating people in nicer ways.
This is the most expensive game I've bought and it's still a beta. Not only that, I really don't own the game, they do.
In reality we are leasing the S2 license. There's no guarantee that we will be able to use the license if anything happened to the developers. Remember that these guys are not backed by a larger corporation that would make good on their promises.
God forbid they died or got thrown in jail for violating any laws. We'd be up the creek. At least with other simulators you get to keep the rights to use the game, not here.
So, from my point of view, the $49 USD is all they should get. That's all I can afford to lose.
Now, if you have a wife or girlfriend, kiss her goodbye and join the rest of the racing hermits. I guarantee you won't have a life left after today. If I had known, I would have warned you!
